The “blackhat vs whitehat” distinction is completely meaningless when you’re talking about linkbuilding, which I am. All linkbuilding is considered “blackhat” by Google and frankly anything externally you’re doing to game the system (buying social shares, 301ing domains with Forbes links, you name it) is also considered “blackhat” by Google.
Linkbuilding is not dead, and it is not GOING to die anytime reasonably soon. In fact Google has said that they do not intend to stop using links as the general base of their calculations, they experimented with it and found the results to be even worse. The only thing Google can do is hold content and footprints to a higher standard, thus making it more expensive to generate a quality link. Period.
